Mount Kenya Fundraising Climb

This is the team from Ireland who climbed Mount Kenya in August, – Clare Sanders, Kathleen Barry, Paula Cannon, Mags Gallan, James Armstrong, Triona O’Malley and Ellen Sanders.

Mount Kenya is the 2nd highest mountain in Africa and they climbed to 5000 meters! They raised a MASSIVE £17,049.42 which will be used to drill a water bore hole on the new secondary school site and help to pay for vocational training. A huge thanks goes out to all who have supported us and especially Portwest – The Outdoor Shop in Westport, Mayo, Ireland; who sponsored them with the right kit, to make the climb safely!

In order to see the sunrise over the top of the mountain we were up at 2am, to start walking at 3am. None of us quite new what to expect, other than it was going to be hard! At this altitude you walk very slowly with frequent stops to catch your breath. We walked in a line, up an extremely steep incline in the pitch dark, with a carpet of stars, a beautiful moon and head torches to guide the way. It was a truly amazing experience, and after 3 and half hours, and a hairy scramble up a 200m cliff face, we finally made it to the top.
